Bob Ross -- the beloved '80s painting guru who passed away in 1995 -- experienced an unexpected resurgence in popularity in 2016. After Netflix started streaming his TV Series - The Joy of Painting. Ross became very popular again. Adobe took notice, and decided to pay homage to the late painter in a series of tutorial videos promoting their new Adobe Photoshop Sketch for the iPad Pro.

Nintendo: - https://youtu.be/yJched2MvZ8

Many children who grew up in the 80s and 90s remember playing Nintendo games with their siblings. But, for the children growing up with siblings, many also remember the sad feelings related to growing apart or drifting away from a relative. This commercial highlights both of those memories by telling the story of two Nintendo-loving brothers who grow apart, argue as teenagers, and then happily reunite as adults to play the new Nintendo Switch together.

My Chosen area: Film Production

I've chosen this path because I've been wanting to be a film director since I was little as I used to make stop motion movies out of LEGO and have always had a good imagination.

Chosen Topic - Nostalgia:

I chose the theme 'Nostalgia' because I felt that there were a lot of ways I can experiment using it. Nostalgia can link to anything from the past and I have a lot of old materials that I can use to pull of a retro style. I've made a mood board showing a few examples of what I can do using this theme by displaying pictures of older TV Shows and Technology.

30 Second TV Advert:

I was thinking about how to capture Nostalgia in a film and then advertising came into mind. Various companies have introduced a new product that has some link to nostalgia. One example would be Nintendo in 2016 when they introduced the NES Classic which was a redesign of their first ever console from the 80s. The other two examples are ads that were on Television that use an older character that an older audience would be familiar with. Such as an Australian Tourism Ad that was displayed like a movie trailer of 'Crocodile Dundee' which was a famous 80s movie. There was also this other one that featured an actor dressed as the famous painter 'Bob Ross' demonstrating the Adobe Sketchpad for iPad Pro.

This is all similar what I want to create. I want to create a short advert that uses older properties as a way of promoting a more recent product.

Target Audience:

My ad can really be watched by any age but I personally feel that it's more suited for ages 10+ because children by that age would be old enough to have them memories to growing up.

Responsibility:

As I am working independently, I will be the Cinematographer and Editor for the project. I want to master the skill at editing film clips together as that's mostly what I'll be doing in the future. I also believe that being the cinematographer would benefit because it allows me to plan throughly instead of just getting into it.

Secondary Research:

For the Secondary Research I decided to look into how I can make something look 'nostalgic'. This involved looking at different camera filters or recent movies that brought back nostalgia. From this I was able to get an understanding of what I should include in my FMP and to have different ways of experimenting.

Primary Research:

For the Primary Research, I had created a quiz on Socrative that gave out questions on what people grew up with. Not many people answered but I gave the questionnaire to family who happily answered but the results were very mixed.

Competitive Research:

I've looked at 3 different companies and how they have advertised a new product. All these ads have been presented in some retro way. Nintendo's Ad for the NES Classic uses a retro colour palette and is presented as if it was an 80s gaming advert. The Adobe Ad also uses a retro style with the camera quality and the character portraying Bob Ross who was famous in the 80s and 90s. Finally, the Australian Tourism Ad uses this trailer template to show the 80s movie character 'Crocodile Dundee' but in a more modernised way.

Justification Of Idea:

I feel it is important to show off my Cinematography and Editing skills so I can then move onto doing a level 3 course next year. I also want to be able to express my ideas and show what exactly I can do with the choice of various topics.

Mind Map:

As you can see, I have noted down a few ideas for how I want to create my advert. This was one of the first few things I had done for the project and so you can probably see that I was decisive on whether I wanted to create a video or poster.

Feedback & To Do List

Feedback and To Do List as of 9th May 2023.jpg

Secondary Research - 90s Vs 2000s Nostalgia:

I've done some extra secondary research, this time focusing on 90s and 2000s nostalgia. This was because I wanted to use props that referred to those decades but couldn't decide on which one I wanted to focus on. Therefore, I decided to do research on both so I could compare them and make a final decision on what I felt more comfortable with. I researched using Google to find tech, music, TV shows, and movies from the 90s and 2000s that people would have nostalgia for. At home, I have quite a lot of props that I know I can use for the background of my advert. I've also decided that I'm going to focus more on the 2000s as I was born in 2005, but I'm also going to lean towards the 90s in a few details as I want this advert to appeal to both generations.

Nostalgic Ad - Storyboard

Age Rating and TV Channels/Social Media:

Age Rating:

Originally, my plan was to have the advert aimed for children 10+ years. However, after my presentation pitch I was informed that a lot of the characters and technology I had presented on the mood board were from 15+ years ago. Because of this, I want my advert to appeal towards mostly 2000s kids but also 90s kids as I was someone who grew up in the 2000s therefore I know I have a lot of props I can use. The age rating I'm going for will be 25+ because even if some of the props may not be that old, I just felt that age would be more suited as people that age now would've spent their childhoods in the 2000s.

TV Channels/Social Media:

Originally, my plan was to have the advert appear on Kids TV Channels (e.g. Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network) but since the product I'm wanting to advertise is a chocolate bar, I hadn't realised that you're not legally allowed to advertise sugary products on a Kids TV network. After I was reminded of this, I started to think about what other TV channels I can use and then the channels ITV, Channel 5 and Channel 4 came into mind. I also considered FOX but then found out that it was closed in the UK in 2021

In terms of social media, I was just looking into which ones I definitely knew had advertisers and then Facebook, YouTube and Instagram came into mind. I decided that these should be my main three platforms to advertise on as so many people use them.

Experimentation:

No Filter, Wide Shot

Black & White Filter, Tracking Shot

Regular Filter, Birds Eye View

Close Up of Hungry Hippos

Close Up Shot of SpongeBob toy

Over the weekend, on Saturday the 13th, I searched under my bed to find some old toys I had during childhood. This was a hard process as I literally had to go through a load of old boxes and see what I find. What I had done was scatter them out and tried to copy my storyboard and the overall idea was to have a toy train pass through many different toys that people in the 2000s or 1990s are likely going to be nostalgic with and to then end it with the chocolate bar at the end. What I learned from this experiment was that there are so many different shots and filters I can use to make the advert look appealing. I experimented with a lot of different shots in order to find out which one I felt worked better. In my final piece, I'm going to try and use an overview shot and find any filter that can give off that old school camera look and then finish it with a pack shot and then the slogan.

Results For Primary Research:

Here is my full attempt at Primary Research. I had done some Primary research a few weeks back but unfortunately I got unlucky with the results as I only had one person answer but this time I actually had pasted the link on the ORION Tab in Teams so then that way my whole class could access it. The questions were all linked to my advert and were about what the word 'nostalgia' means, TV shows people grew up with and adult TV channels they're more associated with. The results were mixed but what I got from it was that many people associated nostalgia with Memories and that most people felt that Sepia was the most nostalgic filter. The TV Shows and Music were a real mix because there was a proper mixture but most of the TV shows were from the 2000s and for the chocolate bar a lot of people said Cadburys which makes sense as they've been around for a very long time.

My Final Advert:

One Drive Link (If video link doesn't work)

Over the weekend, I had finally shot the advert after many weeks of planning. I was already very busy that weekend, so I unfortunately didn't have time to complete the editing process, but on the following Monday I sat down and used CapCut in order to put the clips together and add the background music afterwards.

What I think went well was that I was able to use a wide range of props, which not only added to that 'nostalgia' theme but also resulted in the advert looking more detailed. I also think that the camera filter and music were used effectively because I feel that it definitely captures that 'VHS' feel hence that I use the VHS filter on CapCut and the background music was actually a piano cover of the 'Toy Story' theme and I thought that would be a perfect fit as the adverts all about nostalgia in a kid's bedroom and that sweet treat that would always take you back.

There are a few things that I feel could make the advert better, and one of them is the look of the advert. The overall goal was to make the advert look old school and like it's an old home video, and I remember with an older project I did for this course that I had a video with that old recording frame and filter, but I couldn't find it when I was editing which then made me think they may have gotten rid of it. Because of this, I ended up improvising and just finding whatever was available and there was a whole section of retro filters available on CapCut. One other thing that I struggled with was the planning of the message of the advert. I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve in the advert but couldn't think specifically about what the message behind the advert was.

FMP Reflective Log/Reflection:

17th - 20th April

After Easter, we finally move onto our FMP (Final Major Project) and so I've spent all this week planning on what I want to include in my project. Our tutor gave a selection of themes for our project and the one I had chosen was 'Nostalgia' because I have a lot of memories from my childhood and wanted to implement that in an advert of some form. On the first day back, I straight away knew what it was I wanted to aim for and so I made a PowerPoint where I brainstormed loads of different ideas on what I wanted in my FMP. This involved creating a mood board and SWOT analysis. On Tuesday, our teacher gave us a run through on Primary and Secondary research and we then created a quiz on Socrative or Google Forms for our Primary research, Unfortunately, I didn't end up sharing mine at the end of the lesson because I was very tight for time but I had the link therefore I held onto it for the next lesson. On Wednesday, I continued on developing my Secondary research by researching Nostalgia represented in photography and different Movies that have brought back 'Nostalgia'. This helped give me a rough idea on how I want to create my final product because it gave me loads of different ways to experiment.

24th - 27th April

On the 2nd week, We had now moved onto creating a Pitch Deck presentation. This was done so we can demonstrate to the teacher on how we want to create our FMP. On Monday, our tutor sent a link through Microsoft Teams which explained exactly what was expected on the presentation which definitely helped because I could go through each bullet point and make sure it's definitely on the presentation. On Tuesday, our teacher gave us some tips for the presentation for how to talk to the audience and how we should display the presentation. This helped me understand what I should do to get the higher grade which would absolutely benefit as I really want to pass the course.

On Wednesday, we carried on with the presentation. I went through all the slides to make sure I was happy with everything but the only struggle I encountered was that I don't know exactly what I want to feature in my final product but only know the themes and structure. I should hopefully resolve this soon because I'm going to look around my house for items I had during my childhood and see how I can make an ad around them. I have a load of filming equipment at home so it's a huge benefit for me to do it in my own time. I had finished all the main slides of presentation and noted everything I wanted to say and because of that I ended up working at a slower pace as I didn't want to sit in the middle of a classroom with no work to do. On the Thursday, I decided to add my progress work onto the Wix Site so then that way those who have seen my presentation can see the planning process behind it. I felt it was important to show all of my planning so then that way everyone would be able to recognise how my Advert ended up looking like it did.

1st - 4th May

This was the week where we were going to be presenting our pitch and I was actually the first person to be presenting. On the Monday, we were actually not in college as it was Bank Holiday and so I spent that day making sure I was all prepared for the presentation. On Tuesday, I made sure everything was done quickly before I sent it to my teacher and I was feeling very nervous before I presented. I was able to deliver everything effectively and got some good feedback from the teacher but there was a few things he pointed out that I hadn't actually thought about such as how my targeted audience being a 10+ isn't suitable for the characters and themes I wanted to include as they're 15+ years old. I was also told that I need to be more clear on what it is exactly I would like to include in my final project and I even learnt that you're not actually allowed to advertise sugary products on a Kid's TV channel which was something I hadn't actually thought about but it now makes sense. On Wednesday and Thursday, I focused on improving this and thinking more deeply into how I'm going to advertise my product and had came across some step backs such as the meaning of the advert. I knew what I wanted to include in my advert but I was stuck on the moral of the advert. It was supposed to be an advert about being a child and those memories you have eating your favourite chocolate bar.

May 9th - 11th

This week, we had another bank holiday Monday and so therefore we weren't in college to complete our FMP. Usually, I would try to complete unfinished work or revise on some Maths. However, I was very tight for time because that same day I was coming back from a weekend abroad. I was able to get some Maths revision which was important for me as I needed to pass that subject. On Tuesday, I was given a schedule for me fill in and complete over time which was supposed to help me keep track of what I have left to complete and exactly what days I can complete each task. Tuesday was also a good day for me to tidy up my Wix page because before then I had put all evidence on the page except it all looked very unorganized and plus I had some planning work I needed to upload and so my 2 hour lesson had definitely given me enough time to make sure everything was uploaded and up to a good standard. On Wednesday, I focused much more on the secondary research. My secondary research as shown in the presentation was looking a bit weak and so I knew I had to improve on that and so I researched into Music, Film, TV and Technology from both the 90s and 2000s. The only barrier is that I had to make sure this was all from the UK as most of the website could either be worldwide or from the US. However, I was still able to get the right information as there was plenty of website to choose from. I even put the links to the websites where I collected the data from to show that it was definitely secondary.

14th - 18th May

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend college due to an appointment I had to attend to that we couldn't reschedule. However, I was able to catch up on the next day. During the weekend, I decided to do some experimentation at home and I did this by searching under my bed for various toys I had during my childhood. Most of these were very similar to ones I used in the storyboard such as a toy train set. I scattered these out on my bedroom floor and had came up with the idea of having the camera follow the train in some way. There were a few problems I had encountered such as the limited space in my bedroom as it wasn't the same shape as the one in the storyboard. It also took many attempts for me to find a perfect shot for the train passing as I tried all sorts of different angles and movements like truck, birds eye view and overview. Eventually, I found some that worked and I uploaded my progress onto my WIX Site. That same day I tried again with Primary Research as I was unsuccessful the first time and this time I was able to collect a handful of results from others in my media class. The survey asked people questions about things they are nostalgic with, what they associate with the word 'nostalgia', what they think makes a photo look nostalgic and many more. I felt that this was effective because it shows me more specifically what people find nostalgic and since I gave it to people of different ages, it showed me a lot of different TV shows from different eras. I think this is very helpful as it now gives me an impression on what was popular in the 80s, 90s and 2000s and also how I could potentially include them into the advert. This weekend I plan on making the advert and I've got it all set out at home and I have enough planning to copy from. I can't imagine there really being anything getting into the way as I haven't got any major plans this weekend but I aim to do it on the Friday after my first Maths exam so then it gives me the weekend to rest.

22nd - 25th May:

This was our final week to finish the project meaning I had only 4 days to make sure I'd finished and uploaded my advert and also annotated it. It was important for me that week to check that I had definitely uploaded everything that was required for the FMP which included the mind maps, research, project proposal and Presentation. I spent this week finishing of the editing for the advert as the weekend prior I had been filming it. This involved sending the advert to my college account via email and then uploading it to WIX Site which was an easy task since I've done it loads of times before. I then wanted to annotate it by explaining what the advert is, what went well and other ways I feel that I could improve. After Monday, I had felt that there just wasn't anything left that I still needed to add as I've been going through the PowerPoint that my Tutor attached explaining what's expected in the FMP but I've ticked off everything there was. the next step for me then was to go through everything I'd done and make sure it was up to a good standard and along the way I did notice a few details were either missing or weren't clear enough and so I took this as my opportunity to add to it and clean up everything on my WIX site making sure that not only is everything on there but it's also presented in a professional way. I had been scrolling through my website loads of times but there was nothing in particular that I felt needed more detail and so I was a bit lost on what I could do next
